Journey to Africa

Quebec City, Canada

Fly into Quebec City at your leisure and enjoy this lovely town full of history and culture. We will meet at the beautiful Fairmont Le Chateau Frontenac.

In the late afternoon, there will be a briefing on the Journey including a review of the first flight leg which will take us over Quebec to Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.

This evening we will gather for a welcome cocktail to get acquainted with the group before we enjoy our first dinner together.

Kangerlussuaq, Greenland

Fly over the immense forests and numerous lakes of Canada on our way to Kuujjuaq, in northern Canada, for a technical stop. Then continue over southern Greenland’s beautiful scenery before landing at Kangerlussuaq in western Greenland.

Because we will be approaching the Arctic Circle and the “land of the midnight sun,” we will have an astonishing 20 hours of daylight!

Reykjavik, Iceland

Our scenic flight across the Atlantic continues to Reykjavik, Iceland. Staying in the heart of the city overlooking the picturesque square of Austurvollur, we are within walking distance of Reykjavik’s iconic landmarks such as Hallgrímskirkja, the striking church that dominates the city skyline, and Althingi, the national parliament, one of the oldest existing parliaments in the world.

The following day, we will enjoy an incredible Super Jeep tour where you will witness Iceland’s most exciting natural attractions. First, we will visit Thingvellir National Park—a unique place of beauty with its interesting geology and history before heading eastbound on the mountain road to Lyngdalsheioi to view the lava fields on the hills above Laugarvatn. At Haukadalur we will visit the famous Strokkur geyser erupting and spewing boiling water into the air. We will spend some time here observing the eruptions and exploring the hot springs before heading up to the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall cascading into the white Hvita River along with glacial water.

Shannon, Ireland

Our Journey continues to Shannon, Ireland, where the adventure begins with a transfer to the quaint village of Adare. Nestled in the lush heartlands of Limerick County, Adare Manor and Golf Resort awaits, its 840-acre demesne steeped in history and surrounded by medieval ruins. Day one invites exploration of beautiful parklands, trout fishing on the river Maigue, and a renowned 18-hole championship golf course.

Day two offers leisure and discovery amidst the expansive 350-acre Adare Manor Estate. Engage in a variety of activities from horse riding, fishing, and falconry, to modern pursuits like golf, cycling, and kayaking. Delve into the world of wine with a private tasting at the Wine Cellars, uncovering exceptional flavors and captivating histories.

On day three, immerse yourself in the majestic world of birds of prey. Skilled falconers introduce you to a diverse array of eight raptors, including owls like “Tiny,” the Scops Owl and “Olaf,” the Snowy Owl. Granada, Spain

Our journey to Granada, Spain begins with a grand arrival at the exquisite Hotel Alhambra Palace, a majestic gem nestled atop a hill, offering breathtaking views of the city. The following day, we embark on a full-day city tour, unveiling Granada’s rich history and captivating culture. Our exploration takes us through the magnificent Alhambra Palace, the enchanting streets of the Albayzín district, and the iconic Mirador de San Nicolás, where we soak in breathtaking views. As the sun sets, we’re transported to a world of passion and rhythm at Tablao Flamenco Albayzin, where a mesmerizing Flamenco show captivates our senses, leaving us with lasting memories of this luxurious journey.

N’Djamena, Chad

Our Journey takes us to N’Djamena, Chad, with a technical stop in Tamanrasset, Algeria for refueling. Upon landing, we’re warmly welcomed at the Radisson Blu Hotel, an elegant oasis in the heart of the city, offering modern design, impeccable service, and luxurious amenities for a harmonious fusion of indulgence and relaxation.

Our adventure begins with a visit to the National Museum, where an impressive collection of traditional crafts, archaeological wonders, and historical documents unveil the country’s rich heritage. We’re then captivated by the grandeur of the Presidential Palace, a testament to Chad’s political history and architectural splendor. A leisurely stroll along the serene Chari River offers picturesque views and opportunities to discover traditional crafts, while the bustling Central Market beckons us to haggle for local produce and handicrafts.

As the day unfolds, vibrant expressions of Chad’s diverse ethnic groups come alive through traditional music and dance performances. For those seeking adventure, boat trips on Lake Chad and safari tours at Zakouma National Park await. To complete this cultural odyssey, we savor the flavors of Chad with traditional dishes such as Chadian stew and millet-based porridge.

Libreville, Gabon

Our journey takes us to Libreville, Gabon, where we embark on a scenic boat transfer to Pongara Lodge, nestled in the heart of Pongara National Park. This rustic yet charming accommodation comprises a series of attractive wood structures strung out along the forest line, with a larger main lodge featuring a bar and restaurant offering ocean views.

The following day promises an exhilarating adventure as we embark on a thrilling drive through Pongara National Park. Participating in scheduled safari activities, we have a unique opportunity to encounter the majestic mandrills, alongside other remarkable creatures such as elephants, apes, and rare birds. Navigating through diverse habitats, including enchanting mangroves, serene swamps, and lush riverine forests, we immerse ourselves in the park’s natural wonders.

The subsequent day is left at leisure, offering time to relax and explore at our own pace. Optional activities abound, including biking, extensive forest hikes, 4×4 buggy excursions, fishing, kayaking, and more. Livingston, Zambia

Our journey to Livingstone, Zambia begins with a transfer to the Royal Livingstone Lodge, nestled on the Zambian side of the Zambezi River in Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, mere steps away from the awe-inspiring Victoria Falls—one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Later, we indulge in a unique experience aboard the Livingstone Express, a meticulously restored steam locomotive adorned with polished leather, teak, and brass. This journey through the national park and Zambezi River Valley offers vintage luxury intertwined with a modern fine dining experience, invoking moments of bygone romance.

The following day is filled with adventure as we embark on a helicopter tour to explore the many facets of Victoria Falls, the largest falling curtain of water in the world. Notable among its features is the naturally formed Devil’s Pool, where during safe river flow levels (typically September to December), visitors can swim close to the edge without danger, thanks to a natural rock wall that halts their progress. We conclude the day with a sunset cruise on the mighty Zambezi River, a quintessential experience offering glimpses of crocodiles and hippos just upstream from the falls.

Namib Desert, Namibia

Our journey continues as we depart from Livingstone and fly to Walvis Bay, Namibia. From there, we will take a local charter flight to Sossusvlei Desert Lodge, nestled against the ancient mountains and offering luxurious accommodations with stunning views of the Namib Desert. This sophisticated desert retreat promises a truly exceptional experience.

The following day, we embark on a remarkable adventure through Namibia’s breathtaking landscapes. Scenic game drives in open 4×4 safari vehicles take us on a quest to track the extraordinary desert-adapted elephants, one of only two known populations worldwide. These resilient creatures have uniquely adapted to thrive in the harsh desert environment, a testament to the wonders of nature.

As we continue to explore the area, the unique terrain and wildlife come alive before us. From the open 4×4 vehicles, we can admire the vast expanse of the desert and its diverse inhabitants. For a thrilling experience, ascend the massive red sand dunes that characterize the region and take in the awe-inspiring views from the top.

Cape Town, South Africa

Our Journey continues to Cape Town, South Africa, where we transfer upon arrival to the One&Only Cape Town hotel. Situated in the cosmopolitan Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, the One&Only offers stunning views of Table Mountain and Signal Hill.

The next day, we embark on a full-day tour to explore some of Cape Town’s most renowned attractions. We visit beautiful Clifton Beach, historic Simon’s Town, the renowned Chapman’s Peak Drive, Seal Island, and the African Penguin Colony. The journey continues to Cape Point Nature Reserve and Kirstenbosch Gardens, inviting us to take in the breathtaking vistas of Cape Point, as well as the beauty of The Cape of Good Hope. From Clifton Beach, Camps Bay, and Hout Bay to historic Simon’s Town and beyond, there are countless picture-perfect moments to capture.

Following the tour, the subsequent day is at your leisure, allowing you time to relax or explore the city independently.

Okavango Delta, Botswana

Our journey begins with a flight to Maun, followed by a local charter flight to Sandibe Okavango Safari Lodge. The lodge features indulgent tented rooms designed for optimal game spotting, offering elevated private decks where guests can observe wildebeest, zebra, and elephants. Guests can also relax in a hammock as wildlife saunters by. Daily morning and afternoon game drives in 4×4 vehicle allow for up-close encounters with Africa’s incredible animals.

After dinner, night drives with spotlights and stargazing presentations are available. Since the lodge is located on a private concession, vehicles can operate before and after sunset and venture off road.

On subsequent days, scheduled safari activities continue with professional guides and trackers, providing opportunities to encounter Africa’s diverse wildlife, including the iconic Big Five. These excursions take place in custom-made vehicles with unobstructed views from every seat, ensuring a thrilling and immersive experience. Wildlife such as giraffe, buffalo, lion, leopard, cheetah, and wild dogs can be spotted throughout the year.

Bazaruto Island, Mozambique

We begin by taking a charter flight back to Maun to retrieve our airplanes before continuing on to Mozambique. Upon arrival in Mozambique, we transfer by helicopter to Anantara Bazaruto Island Resort, an exclusive private island retreat located 18 miles off the mainland. The resort offers pristine beaches and crystal-clear waters, providing a serene and breathtaking natural setting.

The following day, we will visit Ibo Island, a former prosperous trading post from the 15th to 18th centuries, known for its history involving slaves, pirates, silver, ivory, and intrigue. Through a guided walk, we will learn about the island’s secrets, history, and culture, and interact with the amazing local people, observing their unique island culture.

On the final day, you have the leisure to relax or explore on your own. Take advantage of complimentary activities such as sea kayaking, a sunset dhow cruise, a scheduled snorkeling trip, an island expedition, a local village tour, birding, and guided nature walks (subject to availability and weather conditions). Enjoy the natural beauty and diverse activities offered on the island.

Arusha, Tanzania

Our Journey continues to Arusha, Tanzania where we will land at the Kilimanjaro Airport. With a charter flight to the Serengeti scheduled for the following day, enjoy an overnight stay at the beautiful Legendary Lodge, situated just outside Arusha. Legendary Lodge is set in lush tropical gardens on a working coffee farm.

Western Serengeti, Tanzania

We will take a local charter flight to Manyara for our transfer to Grumeti Serengeti River Lodge. Located in the remote Western Corridor of the Serengeti, Grumeti offers a private Serengeti experience with exclusive game viewing in some of the most secluded parts of Africa’s most famous game reserve. The camp’s rustic yet sophisticated safari tents are nestled under the shade of an evergreen forest along the banks of a Grumeti River tributary. Black and white colobus monkeys can be seen in the foliage, while hippos reside in the tranquil pool in front of the camp.

The next day, we’ll participate in scheduled safari activities, known for the big lion pride that can range from 20 to 60 individuals. The western part of the Serengeti is an excellent location for spotting these majestic cats. Game drives from the camp may also provide sightings of large lion prides and clans of up to a hundred hyenas, as well as herds of wildebeest and zebra during Tanzania’s annual Great Migration.

Throughout the journey, we’ll experience the diverse Serengeti landscapes dominated by vast plains. In addition, we’ll encounter some of Africa’s largest crocodiles during the migration crossings as the masses of wildebeest and zebra navigate the Grumeti River in search of fresh grazing grounds.

Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda

We will transfer by helicopter to One&Only Gorilla’s Nest. Cushioned in the foothills of the breathtaking Virunga Volcano Range along the northwestern frontier of beautiful Rwanda, the Gorilla’s Nest is the closest resort to Volcanoes National Park. It makes the magical possible as you enjoy a one-in-a-lifetime, personal encounter with the rare and majestic mountain gorilla, roaming free in their own natural habitat.

An exhilarating trek in the footsteps of the rare and critically endangered mountain gorilla – the largest living primate on earth – starts in the dramatic scenery of the Virunga foothills. Trekkers will be immersed in the mysterious intimacy of the primeval rainforest, alive with colorful bird calls, ferns, and butterflies. Experienced local trackers are rangers who have spent their entire lives in this forest. Weaving through the overhanging vines, moss-covered hagenia and giant lobelias that thrive in the tropical climate, the rangers soon bring us up close with a gorilla family.

Addis Ababa, Ethiopia

Fly to Addis Ababa, the heart of the Ethiopian capital. You’ll stay at the Sheraton Addis, a luxurious hotel situated on a hilltop with expansive views over the city, nestled safely between the National Palace and the Prime Minister’s residence.

The following day, you’ll explore the highlights of Addis Ababa with a local guide. Visit the Ethnological Museum, Holy Trinity Cathedral, National Museum, and St. George’s Cathedral to learn about the rich history and cultural heritage of the city.

Luxor, Egypt

We will depart Addis Ababa and fly to Luxor, Egypt. Upon arrival, we will transfer to the luxurious Hilton Luxor Resort & Spa, nestled on the east bank of the River Nile in the village of Karnak. This Hilton gem offers stunning views of the river and the historic city of Luxor. Following an early dinner, we will visit the Luxor Temple, a marvel of ancient architecture initially crafted by Amenhotep III in 1380 BC.

The next day, we will explore Thebes, Luxor’s West Bank, and its secret tombs. We will discover the Valley of the Kings, home to richly-painted tombs of New Kingdom pharaohs, and the Valley of the Queens, the resting place of pharaohs’ wives and children. Next, we will stop at the Colossi of Memnon, two massive statues that once guarded the entrance to Amenhotep III’s great temple, followed by a visit to the Luxor Museum, which showcases artifacts from ancient Thebes.

The following day, we will experience the Sound and Light Show at Karnak Temple, where the temple complex is brought to life with lights and sound, revealing its architectural marvels and the tales of the pharaohs. If the weather permits, we will enjoy a felucca ride on the Nile to Banana Island and Crocodile Island. This comprehensive journey allows us to delve into the rich history of ancient Egypt.

Cairo, Egypt

Our Journey continues to Cairo, Egypt, “The City of a Thousand Minarets,” for its prevalence of Islamic architecture. Even before Cairo was established in the 10th century, the land composing the present-day city was the site of national capitals whose remnants remain visible in parts of Old Cairo. Upon arrival, we will transfer to Marriott Mena House, our home for the next three nights.

The next day, our full-day guided tour begins with a visit the Giza Plateau, where we will visit to the Great Pyramids of Giza, one of the seven wonders of the ancient world. Enjoy the great Pyramids of Cheops, Chephren and Mycerinus before continuing down to the Valley Temple to visit the guardian of this mortuary complex, the mighty Sphinx. We will have lunch at a local restaurant to experience a variety of Egyptian food. Our tour continues to Sakkara, Egypt’s oldest ancient cemetery. We will visit the world’s first monumental stone building, the Step Pyramid of King Zoser, built by the engineer Imhotep and one of the magnificent Mastabas (burial chamber) of either Ptahhotep, Idut or Mereruka.

Our third day in Cairo will unfold amidst the awe-inspiring exhibits of the Grand Egyptian Museum, allowing us to witness the grandeur of Egypt’s historical legacy. As we explore the museum’s vast halls, we will be captivated by majestic statues, priceless relics, and the meticulously curated artifacts, revealing the intricate details of a civilization that has left an indelible mark on the world.

Rome, Italy

Our Journey continues as we fly on to Rome. Set in the Old City of Rome, close to the Spanish Steps and Villa Borghese, the luxury Hotel Eden offers the feel of a private home and a rooftop restaurant providing panoramic views of St. Peter’s Dome and the Eternal City. Situated within a historic building dating back to 1889 and completely renovated in 2017, the hotel is steps from some of the city’s top attractions.

The following day, we will enjoy a visit to the Vatican Museums with a private guide which will unveil all the must-sees in the Vatican, from the Gallery of Maps, to the Sistine Chapel and St. Peter’s. We will have exclusive access to the Cabinet of Masks, an elegant room which hosts roman marble statues and mosaics. This is an unforgettable experience of one of the world’s most fascinating and visited collections. Afterwards, a city tour will unveil the authentic look of the Eternal City. Explore the well-known attractions and iconic landmarks – Piazza Navona, Piazza Venezia, the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, and the Pantheon – but also discover hidden gems along the way as our guide reveals some of the city’s fascinating secrets.

The last day in Rome is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own. Your Journey Director will be available to help you plan your day.

Normandy, France

Embark on an exhilarating journey in Deauville, France, where the adventure begins with a transfer to the historic Chateau de Canisy in France’s Canisy. Nestled on 740 acres of lush Normandy countryside, this privately-owned chateau boasts a rich legacy spanning over 1,000 years, offering a taste of French royalty as we are welcomed by the Kergolay family.

Day two invites exploration of the iconic D-Day sites, where history comes alive amidst the cliffs, bunkers, and beaches of Normandy. Codenamed Overlord, the largest invasion force in history, we’ll pay homage at museums, memorials, and the poignant American Cemetery, retracing the steps of heroes who shaped the course of history.

Day three is at your leisure to relax and explore on your own. Your Journey Director will be available to help you plan your day. There is an optional expedition to the captivating Mont-Saint-Michel, a tidal island steeped in Gothic splendor. Home to the awe-inspiring Benedictine abbey dedicated to Saint Michael, we’ll marvel at the village nestled beneath its towering walls, adapting to the unique challenges posed by this remarkable natural site.
